The U.S. has a higher infant mortality rate than any other high-income country. In 2020, the rate was 5.4 deaths per 1,000 live births, while countries like Norway have rates as low as 1.6 [US Has Highest Infant, Maternal Mortality Rates Despite the Most Health Care Spending].
The U.S. also has the highest maternal mortality rate among developed nations. In 2018, there were 17 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births, compared to just 3 per 100,000 in countries like the Netherlands and Norway [Maternal Mortality and Maternity Care in the United States Compared to 10 Other Developed Countries - Commonwealth Fund].
Ending infant and maternal mortality in America will require a concerted effort from many different stakeholders. Healthcare providers, policymakers, and community organizations all have a role to play. We need to ensure that all women have access to quality prenatal care, that we have a strong public health infrastructure in place to prevent and treat pregnancy-related complications, and that we address the root causes of racism and poverty that contribute to these deaths.
It is a challenging mission, but it is one that is worth fighting for. We must all be committed to this goal, and we must all be willing to do our part.
We are here to support you through your journey. Give us a call!
